Spooky Month 1: Weekly DnD Resources and Encounters

10/8/23 – We’re hard at work getting “The Mayor of Mayville” together and have found an artist we’re going to work with. While we use generated art through Midjourney during the week, we are aiming to work with artists on any officially published work.

That said, we’re excited to announce we’ll be launching a Kickstarter for the one-shot. More on this next week! Funding will primarily cover art, but we’ll also have some fun stretch goals and add-ons in case things go really well.

If you have any NPC ideas for us (vendors or merchants primarily) let us know! We’d love to include community ideas. Now, onto the spotlights!

    DnD Creator Spotlight

DM Resource: donjon. This is probably one of our most-used tools, especially when it comes to creating dungeons. The dungeon generator on donjon is full-featured, let’s you determine room size, the types of doors, the dungeon size itself, and then outputs it with full room and trap descriptions. For beginner DMs, this is a great tool to give you a foundation to build off of!

Artist: Jonathan Routt (@jonny.does.art) How Jonathan only has 91 followers on Instagram is mind boggling, but we saw his Golden Golem this week and love what he’s doing. Do yourself a favor and check out his Swordtember series. Which is your favorite?

Mapmaker: The Epic Atlas aka Mike Schley. We came across Mike’s posts this week and they are fantastic for inspiration. He’s added a lot more of his maps and towns over the past month and each one drums up great questions for DMs, like “what happened in this world that the land is split…also why is it floating?” He also is doing some larger deliveries of battlemaps in his world of Fernweh. Check him out!

Liveplay: TBD&D. One of the more intense and impressive setups we’ve seen for a liveplay, TBD&D has 8 of their Prodigal Fools episodes available on YouTube. They are a bit more quiet at the moment (they noted they’re working on some BIG updates), but give them a follow for when they’re back!

Have other creators we should feature? Let us know

    • Girth Drooks – Realm renown bard, known for his many concerts, and his extremely large waistline. Shaped like a giant pear, Girth consistently sells out any venue where he appears. He is said to have a darker alter ego named Chriss “Massive” Gaynes. Consider making Chriss a separate personality or the Rogues aspect of a Bard Rogue multiclass.

    This Week’s Encounters

We’ve started our Spooky Season encounters, thanks to everyone who submitted ideas!

    • Crit Follows – Based on “It Follows,” the party comes across a recently successful woman folded up like a pretzel and unalived. Can the party unravel the mystery? Any level party. More mechanic than encounter.
    • A Nightmare on Realm Street – Children are terrorized in their dreams by a sinister tabaxi called Freddi Cougar. Enter into the astral plane and endure nightmarish scenarios from your childhood in an effort to defeat this fiendish feline. Designed for party levels 8-11.
    • Noseferatu – Odd things keep happening at an open house, leaving a real estate agent begging the party for help. Can they solve the mystery of what evil lurks in the house? For party levels 8+. Loosely based on the classic film Nosferatu.
    • The Shyning – The famous writer Jackson Torrents is having no luck interviewing the ghosts of Oversight Inn. Help the spirits by giving them the courage to come out from hiding and share their stories. This mountain encounter involves combat best suited for party levels 8-11.

If you have a moment, we’d appreciate it if you could take a quick survey for feedback about what else you’d like to see in these weekly newsletters.

Other DnD Encounter Ideas That Didn’t Make It

We’re going to hold on to this for now because we’re doing some month-long idea generation. We’ll be back to our old extra ideas in November! Until then, you can checkout out our other idea lists here.
