Free Animated Battle Maps and VTT-Ready Packs for D&D

The first time your players see water actually moving under the rope bridge, you will hear a noise from them that a paper map has never once produced. Animated maps used to be a luxury for streamer tables. Now there’s enough free, high-quality animated and VTT-ready content that the only real cost is your download folder’s dignity.

Quick orientation before the list: an animated map is usually a looping WEBM or MP4 video. Foundry VTT plays them natively. Other virtual tabletops vary, so check yours before you fall in love. And “VTT-ready” means someone already did the boring part: walls, lighting, and doors are pre-configured so the map just works when you load it.

    The free stuff

    1. Domille’s Wondrous Works. The single biggest give in this category. Domille maintains over two hundred pre-configured Foundry map packs, animated WEBM maps included, free and system agnostic. The specialty is phased battle maps, meaning the map itself changes state mid-fight: the building catches fire, the ritual completes, the bridge goes down. If you run Foundry and download from exactly one place on this list, it’s this one.

    2. Dransky. Animated battle maps in 4K, and the flagship free release is absurd: the entire Lost Mine of Phandelver as an animated map set with its own Foundry module. We covered it in our free maps for official adventures post, but it earns a second mention, because a full module of animated maps for free was not a thing that existed until recently.

    3. Dungeons LAB. Their free Curse of Strahd collection for Foundry goes past animation into full production: music, macros, interactive traps, and multiple variants per scene. It’s the clearest picture of how far “free VTT content” has come.

    4. Chibbin Grove. A map Patreon with animated maps in the mix and a healthy free-post archive. This is the one the big “free maps” Reddit thread flagged years ago for DMs running screens and projectors, and it’s still delivering.

    5. CzePeku’s free rotation. CzePeku is arguably the biggest map studio on Patreon, and they keep a rotation of free maps that are the same quality as the paid ones. The animated variants mostly sit in paid tiers, but the free scenes are how half their subscribers got hooked, and they’re worth it as static maps alone.

    The places to play them

    6. Foundry VTT’s package directory. Foundry is a one-time purchase, but its module directory is stuffed with free community map packs like the ones above. Searching it directly is an underrated discovery method.

    7. Owlbear Rodeo. The free VTT for people who found Foundry intimidating. Drag a map in, drop tokens on it, send your players a link. It’s the fastest zero-dollar path from “I downloaded a cool map” to “we are playing on it.”

    8. AboveVTT. A free browser extension that turns D&D Beyond into a functioning VTT, pulling your monsters and characters straight from your account. If your group already lives on Beyond, this is the lowest-friction option going.

    9. The TV table. Don’t sleep on the in-person version: a flat TV, an HDMI cable, and a looping animated map is the single highest “wow per dollar” upgrade in tabletop. The maps above are all video files. Your TV plays video files. That’s the whole tutorial, and our printing maps on a budget post covers the paper side if your table swings analog.

    The name to know

Dynamic Dungeons is the pioneer of this entire format, and most animated maps you see owe him something. His editor and map library are paid, which is why he’s a footnote here rather than an entry, but if animated maps become your thing, that’s the deep end.

Free animated maps, a free VTT, and a free module’s worth of prepared scenes: the production value that used to require a Critical Role budget now requires a Google search. Pair it with the Big Book of Little Adventures, 200+ short adventures for $9.99, and you can run a movie-looking one-shot this weekend for less than the cost of the snacks.
