Free Printable D&D Battle Maps (For Tables That Still Use Paper)

Everything went digital and then, quietly, a lot of us went back. There is nothing on a screen that beats sliding a real goblin mini across real paper, and the good news is the free map world serves the paper table better than ever. The catch is that “free map” and “printable map” are not the same thing. A gorgeous 4K VTT map can come out of your printer as a muddy dark smear that eats a toner cartridge. This list is picked for what survives the printer.

If you want the full printing playbook, costs and all, we wrote how to print D&D maps on a budget. This post is about which maps to feed it.

    Where the printable maps are

    1. Dyson Logos. Still the first name for a reason. Dyson’s maps are black-and-white line art, which means they print perfectly on anything, including the giant cheap blueprint printers at an office store. Hundreds of dungeons, free for personal use, and a commercial-license section besides. Line art is the correct printing technology for a home printer, and Dyson’s been proving it for fifteen years.

    2. Lost Atlas. A search engine for over five thousand free battle maps. When you need “swamp shrine, 30 by 30” on paper, search it here, pick the brightest and highest-contrast option, and print that one. It came out of the r/dndnext thread asking exactly this question and it’s the tool we wish had existed years ago.

    3. BlackRhino Maps. A cartographer who designs for print first, which is rare enough to matter. Encounter maps built to come out of a home printer looking like they were supposed to, recommended in the same printable-maps thread by people who’d actually printed them.

    4. 2 Minute Tabletop. The free library that happens to be the most printer-friendly art style in the business: bright colors, clean lines, no murky lighting effects. Maps come sized to print at proper one-inch-square scale, and the site’s own guides cover assembling the multi-page ones.

    5. The Fateful Force and Tessa’s module maps. For published adventures, the printable picks from our official adventure maps post hold up: The Fateful Force’s collections and Tessa Presents Maps’ Lost Mine set, which one first-time DM in the thread printed and laminated at their local library for five dollars. Libraries, by the way: criminally underrated print shop.

The tool that makes any map printable

    6. PAVE. PAVE takes any map image and slices it into a tiled, print-at-home PDF at exact scale: you tell it the grid, it splits the map across as many sheets as needed, you print, trim, and tape. This one tool converts the entire internet’s supply of free digital maps into table-sized paper maps. It’s free, it runs in the browser, and it’s the missing link this whole post is built around.

    Print smarter, not prettier

Three lessons from the DMs who do this weekly. First, grayscale is your friend: most color maps print beautifully in black and white at a tenth the ink, and your minis provide the color anyway. Second, the engineering-print counter at an office store will print a poster-sized black-and-white map for a few dollars, which is why Dyson-style line art punches so far above its weight. Third, laminate the maps you’ll reuse and write on them with wet-erase markers; the five-dollar library lamination pays for itself the second time the tavern brawl map hits the table.

A printed map wants a short adventure to sit on top of it. The Big Book of Little Adventures is 200+ one-session adventures for $9.99, written for exactly the kind of table that owns a laminator.
